Tree Hazard Reduction to Occur at State Veterans’ Home

(<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 /><st1:place><st1:City>Pierre</st1:City>, <st1:State>SD</st1:State></st1:place>) --- A day of pruning and removing hazardous trees will take place <st1:date Month="4" Day="11" Year="2003">Friday, April 11, 2003</st1:date> at the State Veterans’ Home in <st1:place><st1:City>Hot Springs</st1:City>, <st1:State>SD.</st1:State></st1:place>

“This will be a great opportunity to see what arborists look for when determining the condition of a tree and what can be done to remedy any problems,” said Aaron Kiesz, Urban Forestry Specialist with the South Dakota Department of Agriculture.    

“SDSU students attending will have a chance to receive training on the correct methods of tree climbing, pruning and complete tree removals.”  Kiesz notes that this opportunity to evaluate damaged trees stems from the Department’s 2002 ‘Hazard Tree Evaluation’ efforts.  “We will be correcting any structural problems we observed during last year’s evaluation that may result in property damage or personal injury.”

Several experts will participate in the hazard tree pruning and removals including <st1:place><st1:PlaceName>South Dakota</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType>State</st1:PlaceType> <st1:PlaceType>University</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>’s Dr. John Ball, Aaron Kiesz and Frank Foster, head of Facilities Management at the State Veterans Home.  Other local partners will embark in this effort as well including Vermeer equipment and various local tree companies.

Anyone wanting to observe the techniques applied by these arborists is welcome to attend.  The tree work will be conducted from <st1:time Minute="0" Hour="9">9:00 a.m.</st1:time> to <st1:time Minute="0" Hour="16">4:00 p.m.</st1:time>
