Attorney General Appoints Mccann Deputy Attorney General For Civil Litigation

Attorney General Ken Salazar announced he has appointed Beth McCann to be his Deputy Attorney General for Civil Litigation. McCann assumed her duties October 1.

McCann will head up the attorney general's civil litigation section, which defends the State of Colorado and its taxpayers against personal injury claims in tort or civil rights; represents the State in procurement and construction litigation and provides legal advice on construction disputes; represents and advises the Departments of Transportation and Corrections, including condemnation and eminent domain proceedings and inmate litigation; and assists in employment litigation. The Section is responsible for handling approximately 700 active cases.

"Beth's experience and prestige as a litigator and public servant make her an excellent addition to our leadership team," Salazar said.

McCann left her post as Director of Excise and Licenses for Denver to become Deputy Attorney General. She had served as city's licenses director since 1995. From 1994 to 1995, McCann was the mayor's Safe City Coordinator, where she started the safe city program targeting youth violence. From 1991 to 1994, McCann was the Manager of Safety for the City and County of Denver, overseeing Denver's police, fire and sheriff departments. From 1984 to 1991, McCann was an associate then six-year partner in the Denver law firm of Cooper & Kelly, P.C., specializing exclusively in professional malpractice, employment and personal injury litigation. From 1976 to 1983, McCann was a deputy then chief deputy district attorney in the Denver district attorney's office. She began her legal career as a law clerk, 1974-1975, for former United States District Court (Colorado) judge, the Honorable Sherman G. Finesilver.

McCann is graduate of Georgetown Law School, and Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio. McCann has served on numerous bar and civic organizations boards and task forces, including chair of the legislation committee for the Denver Bar Association Domestic Violence Task Force, board member of the Legal Aid Society of Metropolitan Denver, president and board member of the Colorado Women's Bar Association, board member, Colorado Bar Association. In addition, McCann has extensively taught and lectured on a variety of subjects throughout her legal career.
