Sen. Shelby To Speak At Attorneys General Conference At Harvard Law School

WASHINGTON, DC --- Sen. Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala.) will address the National Association of Attorneys General at their Second Annual Internet Law Institute on Monday, April 23, 2001 at Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The Conference will feature Attorneys General from around the country as well as prominent figures in business, public policy and education in a discussion of the changing role of technology in today's society.
A founding member of the Congressional Privacy Caucus, Sen. Shelby has been a leader on privacy issues in Congress. He has introduced several pieces of legislation in the 107th Congress to help protect Americans' personal, financial and medical privacy. Already this year, Sen. Shelby has authored legislation to prohibit financial institutions from sharing and selling their customers spending habits without their consent, has pushed for a ban on the sale and purchase of a person's social security number by financial institutions, and sponsored the "Student Privacy Protection Act," legislation that would require schools to adopt policies requiring parental consent before personal information can be collected from students for commercial purposes.

In the speech, Sen. Shelby will outline the role that Congress, states, industry and individuals should play in protecting the privacy of Americans. This overview will encompass the different areas where privacy issues have arisen; including medical privacy, financial privacy and children's privacy.

Sen. Shelby said, "I welcome the opportunity to speak before the National Association of Attorneys General. This forum will provide an excellent opportunity to share my views about the many important privacy issues which will face lawmakers in the coming years."
